Rules that make it work

  • Protein and vegetables first, then rice or chapati.
  • Measure rice once: 1 standard cup cooked. No second serving.
  • Oil: 2-3 tsp per meal at most.
  • Cut completely: sugar in tea, soft drinks, juices.
  • Fried snacks and parotta: once a week at most.
  • One flexible meal per week, not a binge day.
  • Dinner before 8:30 pm, light.
  • Water: 3 to 3.5 L of fluids a day (water, unsweetened tea, buttermilk, lemon water). Add about 500 ml per 30 minutes of exercise. Pale yellow urine means you are on track. Spread it through the day and ease off 1 to 2 hours before bed.
  • Weigh weekly, same morning, same conditions.

If the scale stalls

If your 3-week average hasn't moved, reduce about 150 kcal or add 10 minutes to your daily session. Also check your waist: it often drops even when the scale doesn't.

Before moving to 45-60 minute sessions, get a blood test (sugar/HbA1c, lipids, thyroid) and a blood pressure check. Stop and see a doctor for chest pain, dizziness or breathlessness out of proportion to the effort.
